Augmented reality moves online shopping experience to the next level with Boutique Accessories – Australia!

January 25, 2011, Sydney

Boutique Accessories is proud to be the first online store in Australia to launch an

augmented reality application to create a virtual mirror. This enables customers to “try on” accessories while browsing the website.

Unlike previous technologies, the Boutique Accessories’ virtual mirror does not need customers to print out markers to hold in front of the webcam in order to activate the application.  The virtual mirror automatically detects a webcam, so that customers can “try on” earrings, necklaces and bracelets immediately, take screen shots and post these on Facebook or email to friends.

Boutique Accessories is moving on

Boutique Accessories, recognising the need to build customer confidence in online shopping, developed a virtual mirror that would integrate with their ecommerce system as well as Facebook. This allows a seamless integration between social shopping, interacting with products and instant purchasing.

Breaking the boundaries between virtual and real shopping is important for consumer confidence online. Developments utilising augmented reality will further accelerate this trend.

Allowing customers to try on jewellery to see if it suits their body and style is a big step away from catalogue-shopping, and closer to a real shopping experience, “If more retailers realised the potential benefits of integrating conventinal and online shopping, we would not only have happier customers but a more capable infrastructure for all retailers to utilise the online channel.“

How does the virtual mirror work?

The mirror works using a detection technology to automatically detect a person’s position within the webcam image and place the jewellery in the correct position, appearing as though the person is wearing the jewellery. 3D-imaging is used for graphical projection of each accessory. This enables the detection of body and accessory movements, so that jewellery can be seen from different angles.
More or less each pixel of the face is traced to assist in detecting motion between camera frames. As the essence of the application is about a live video feed and to act like a magic mirror, the rotation of the head compared to the size of the face is also analysed and managed in a way so as to avoid warping. Various algorithms are then called upon to detect neckline, shoulders and face depending on the item being virtually super imposed.

Technical requirements

To make the experience more accessible, instead of downloading a proprietary file, the application runs with Flash version 10.0.  The application requires an Internet Explorer, Firefox or Google Chrome browser, and internet connection.

What is augmented reality?

Augmented reality is a term used for a live direct or indirect view of a physical realworld environment whose elements are augmented by virtual computer-generated graphics or sounds. Other such applications used by online shops enable the “trying on” of glasses and clothes, but there are only a handful of these applications in the world, and Boutique Accessories is the first to launch in Australia.  Boutique Accessories boasts the widest range of jewellery in a face-tracking virtual mirror experience anywhere in the world.

The official launch on Australia Day is not a coincidence, the date was chosen to outline the site’s main purpose, promoting Australian Fashion Designers to the world and encouraging people to buy Australian.

The Virtual Mirror was created to bring a high-end boutique shopping experience online, complementing the VIP returns policy, which aims to make shopping online a better experience for Boutique Accessories customers.
